Our Performance

people outside liverpool echo arena

Since our inception in 1999, we have consistently met or exceeded all targets set by Government and have:

  • Created or safeguarded 222,000 jobs
  • Created 23,000 new businesses
  • Reclaimed 4,700 ha of brownfield land
  • Levered £3.2 billion private sector investment
  • Awarded a "Performing Strongly" rating in the National Audit Office’s Independent Performance Assessment

How We Manage Our Performance

Our performance is assessed against a number of key documents: the Regional Strategy, the Business Plan and the Corporate Plan. The Executive Management Board (EMB) work to ensure all actions within these strategic documents are fulfilled by the NWDA, making regional investment decisions and approving regional projects support.

The Project Review Group (PRG), which is a sub-group of the EMB, is responsible for reviewing any projects being considered by the NWDA. The PRG agrees the allocation of both finance and people to the projects which are approved by the EMB and the Board.

The NWDA - along with the other Regional Development Agencies - meet with key ministers for ministerial briefings on a regular basis. We are accountable to and report to the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), formerly the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR).

BIS's approach to regional policy is designed to build the capability of regions, putting greater emphasis on growth within all regions and strengthening the building blocks for economic success and boosting regional capacity for enterprise.

We are accountable through our Chairman to the Secretary of State and our Chief Executive is personally accountable for the effective and efficient management of public money to Parliament though BIS. We are also accountable to Regional Select Committees and Grand Committees of MPs.

Our Chief Executive also reports to 4NW, the Regional Leaders’ Forum - the voluntary body which reports on the outcome of their scrutiny review each year.

The NWDA is subject to a number of performance management and reporting requirements including Corporate Plans, Annual Reports and Independent Performance Assessments, which are co-ordinated by the National Audit Office (NAO). In common with the other RDAs, we are currently undergoing an Independent Supplementary Review (ISR) by the NAO.

Annual Performance Reports

Under the Government's new Sponsorship Framework for Regional Development Agencies, the NWDA is required to produce an Annual Performance Report stating how it has progressed against the 11 corporate objectives in our Corporate Plan.

The report also covers how the NWDA has integrated the cross-cutting principles of sustainable development and economic opportunities for all into its business and activities. It also reports progress on wider organisational achievements and developments over the past year.

Annual General Meeting & Annual Conference

The Annual Conference & AGM is a chance for regional stakeholders to find out more about the NWDA's key highlights and success stories of the past year and the challenges for the year ahead. It also allows us to report on our performance.

£5.20Every £1 invested in the regional economy by the NWDA averaged a return of £5.20 in economic impact
