New East Manchester
New East Manchester is responsible for the regeneration of a
1,900 ha area of the same name situated immediately east of
Manchester City Centre. The centrepiece of the work in the area is
SportCity, which consists of both indoor and outdoor athletics
tracks, an ISOSPA fitness studio, the National Squash Centre, the
Regional Tennis Centre, the National Cycling Centre, and the
impressive Manchester City Foodball Club stadium which was
initially built for the Commonwealth Games 2002.
Key New East Manchester Projects
- The Ancoats development is made up of three distinct areas:
Ancoats Urban Village, New Islington and Ashton Canal Corridor. The
20 ha that make up the Ancoats Urban Village have been declared a
Conservation area, to help preserve the rich architectural and
historical heritage. The industrial suburb and has one of the
largest concentrations of Grade II and Grade II listed building in
Manchester.
- Cutting Room Square is the first public space in Ancoats Urban
Village. Its name comes from when the outdoor space was where large
swathes of material were cut out during the textile industry boom
of the late 18th century
- New Islington also has an impressive outdoor space – a 1.5 ha
Eco Park, which haven for wildlife and residents alike, with a
boating lake, reed beds and its own shingle beach. Sites have been
chosen for New Islington’s new primary school and state-of-the-art
health centre.
- The Ashton Canal Corridor is dominated by both conversions and
modern developments, including Ovale, a unique building with floor
to ceiling glass and curved walls; Albion Mills, a mixed scheme of
apartments along with a media office centre, bars, restaurants and
a new public square; and Islington Wharf, with its 27-storey
tower.
- Holt Town Waterfront – formerly known as the Bradford Road
Triangle – is a 34 ha regeneration site a mile from Mancheser city
centre and next to the Sportcity complex, which stretches along the
Ashton Canal and the River Medlock. The area is set to be delivered
of a 15-year period to create a sustainable mixed-use community
which will be connected to Manchester city centre on the Droylsden
line of the Metrolink, which is part of phase 3a of the metrolink
extension.
- One Central Park – an £18 million research, technology and
business creation facility – is one of the Agency’s Strategic
Regional Sites.
