Improving Infrastructure: Strategy & Policy

Northwest Regional Economic Strategy sets out what the NWDA and other stakeholders need to do to support the region's infrastructure.

Regional Economic Strategy

Everything we do is set out in the Regional Economic Strategy. The NWDA is responsible for turning the strategy into reality, which is a complex task. We need to be clear what the strategy is for and to make sure it fulfils its aims.

To make our job more manageable, the strategy is split up into bite-size chunks. Infrastructure is one of those chunks. (The others are Business, Skills & Education, People & Jobs and Quality of Life.)

Within the Infrastructure section of the Regional Economic Strategy, we are involved in planning, housing, transport, energy and waste at a strategic level.

RS2010: The Single Regional Strategy for the Northwest

The Northwest Regional Economic Strategy, the Regional Spatial Strategy and the Regional Housing Strategy will be combined in the new single Regional Strategy, known as RS2010. The NWDA has joint responsibility with 4NW in preparing the single Regional Strategy for the Northwest.

Our aim is to develop a strategy that will bring together environmental, social and economic priorities and reflect the Northwest’s long-term commitment to sustainable growth. RS2010 will enable the region to carry out a more in-depth review of future priorities during 2009.

The public consultation process on the Principles and Issues paper, which was a collaboration between the NWDA and 4NW, was completed in April 2009. The Principles and Issues Consultation Summary Report was published in August 2009.

Regional Spatial Strategy

The Regional Spatial Strategy is a broad development strategy for the region. It identifies the scale and distribution of new housing and identifies priorities for transport, economic development and sustainable development. It forms part of the statutory development plan for each local authority and sets the strategic context for the preparation of Local Development Frameworks.

The Regional Spatial Strategy is being combined with the Regional Economic Strategy and the Regional Housing Strategy in a single Regional Strategy for the Northwest.

Regional Housing Strategy

The Regional Housing Strategy focuses on investing in housing needs that support long-term economic growth as well as building communities.

The Regional Housing Strategy is being combined with the Regional Economic Strategy and the Regional Spatial Strategy in a single Regional Strategy for the Northwest.
