Enhancing Quality of Life

England’s Northwest has a rich array of assets which make it a
great place to be. From its vibrant cities and cutting-edge
architecture, to its stunning countryside and quaint rural towns
and villages, the region has a lot to offer - all of which can
enhance the quality of life of those who choose to make the
Northwest their home as well as those who visit.
The NWDA makes a positive contribution towards enhancing quality
of life in the Northwest. The issues we face fit into three
categories: the ones affecting those living and working in the
region; the ones affecting those visiting the region, whether for
work or pleasure; and those influencing economic investment in the
region.
The Agency’s role is to make sure the region functions well for
all of these purposes, so that residents can be proud of where they
live, visitors leave with a lasting positive image of the region
and investors bring new wealth and jobs to the Northwest.
As well as promoting the natural
environment of the region - such as its National Park
and varied coastline - the Agency also works to increase and
improve the Northwest’s strategic green spaces. We work to
improve the design
quality of our buildings and urban spaces as well as
making sure we build using a
sustainable approach.
This work is vital in growing and nurturing a sense of place and
a sense of community
in the region as well as improving the visitor experience and
investment prospects.
The Tourism vision for England’s Northwest is to offer visitors
quality experiences and to maintain and grow our visitor economy.
The latest visitor figures available show that, in 2007, visitors
to the Northwest generated a record £13.6 billion for the regional
economy. Approximately 30 million visitors stayed overnight,
spending £5.3 billion, whilst day visitors generated an estimated
£8.3 billion. The figures show a 4% increase on visitor spend in
2006.
To build on these figures, the NWDA is focusing both on Tourism Development and
Tourism Marketing. We
also have a specific Major
Events strategy to optimise the potential of region’s
one-off and annual events diary.
